James left the Georgia Military Institute in 1863 to volunteer service in the Confederate Army. He enlisted in the Calvary Company under the command of his cousin, Wallis Brumby. At this time, the Company was part of Major Anderson’s Battalion and later became the 7th Regiment of Georgia Confederate Calvary. This Regiment was ordered to Virginia and placed in Young’s Brigade. Wake Hampton Corps, Army of Virginia under the command of General Robert E. Lee. In historical notes found written by James Brumby, he said he joined the Calvary of his cousin Wallis Brumby who was at the time with Major Anderson’s battalion on the Isle of Hope just below Savannah, Georgia. The battalion combined with another under Major McAllister and formed into the 7th Regiment. Per James Brumby’s notes, it was about Christmas in 1864 that our horses were nearly dead from starvation, that we were asked to leave the horses and go by foot to Savannah to try and stop Sherman. While in Savannah, I got very sick and was sent to the hospital in Charleston, where thanks to being Uncle Richard’s nephew, the surgeon in charge being an old friend of his, I was sent to my Father’s home in Linton, Hancock County, Georgia. This is where my father had refugeed from Marietta. [1] |
