Thomas was originally interred in Atlanta in the Oakland Cemetery. Later, his body was moved to West View Cemetery where his grave is surmounted by an obelisk, purchased through public contributions. [1] |

From historical accounts that can be found in the U. S. Naval Academy record books, Thomas entered the U. S. Naval Academy at Annapolis on 25 Sep 1873 and graduated 18 Jun 1879, after serving two years at sea. In 1898-99 he was on the staff of Admiral George Dewey as Flag Lieutenant onboard the Olympia Flagship of the Asiatic Fleet. In this capacity he served under Admiral Dewey at the Battle of Manila Bay. Thomas received the Spanish Campaign Medal, Dewey Medal and the U. S. S. Olympia, 1 May 1898 Medal commemerating the Battle of Manila Bay. [2] |
