BY RANDY BURNS rburns@theitem.com Sumter has lost a beloved businessman and civic leader. James Brown Jr., 80, a Sumter County native, died Feb. 23. He spent more than 30 years as a manager of several local businesses, including Appliance and Television Center, Browning Hall Furniture and Hill Furniture Co. Sam Hunter, who operated a business on Main Street, said Brown was a very good businessman. "He was willing to help people in need," he said. "He would give people credit because he knew they couldn't pay the full price. I bought a lot of things from him over the years. And he was just straightforward. When he said something, you knew he was going to keep his word. His word was his stock and trade." Dr. Ted Young of Sumter said he knew Brown for more than 50 years. "He was a kind and generous man," said Young, "who loved his church, his family and his community. He took wonderful care of his friends and customers." Brown belonged to numerous local civic groups and was chairman of several important fundraising and revitalization committees. He was chairman of the Salvation Army for two years, during the successful building fund for the Youth Center on Belk Street. He was on the restorative committee for downtown Sumter, the committee to establish Habitat of Humanity, the committee for the Crosswell Children's Home, the committee of the Sumter Shelter and was a former member of the Sumter Civic Chorale. He was a member of the Sumter Rotary Club, a Mason and a member of many other committees. Daughter Alicia Thomas said her father had trouble saying no when he was asked to help someone. "My father was involved in so many committees and organizations that we know we left a lot of them out of the obituary," Thomas said. "He was always doing something for somebody else." Brown was also actively involved as a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served in many capacities, including Sunday school superintendent, a deacon, an elder and elder emeritus. Brown also sang in the choir and became well-known for his baritone voice. "He sang at more than 200 weddings," she said. "There are not that many baritone voices around. He had such a strong, comforting and soothing voice." Thomas said her parents had a very special relationship. James and Grace Alexander Brown were married 56 years. "They had a one-in-a-million marriage," Thomas said. "You just don't see many marriages like theirs. They were married on the 20th of the month. And he would always plan vacations or special events to take place on the 20th." Thomas, who was born on Oct. 20, does not credit her parents for her birthdate. "Let's just say I think a higher power is responsible for the date I was born," she said. Betty Reese said she met James and Grace Brown soon after she and her husband moved to Sumter in the 1960s. "James Brown has always been a gentleman and a good businessman," Reese said. "He has a wonderful family. He was just a good Christian man. When people would go to see him, they would walk away with more joy than they ever gave him. I don't have anything but kind words to say about James Brown and his family." Thomas said her father called the family together the day before he died. "Right until the end, my father was the head of the family," she said. "He kept his dignity." Thomas said her father chose not to take "heroic measures to prolong his life, but to let nature take its course." "I want people to know that my father was at peace and that he was ready to go to the Lord," Thomas said. "He wanted us all to be in the room. We had the young grandchildren there, from 1 year old to 7 years old. He told us that he loved us and that he would see us in heaven. There is no doubt in my mind that the Lord and my father had the time of his death orchestrated to the last minute." Posted in News, Local news on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 [2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8] | |
