Former Sumter High, American Legion Coach- He was a Golden Glove boxer before and during his service in the Navy. His high school athletic career led him into the Summerville High School Hall of Fame in baseball, football and basketball. He was head coach of Sumter High School football and baseball teams from 1946 to 1955. He coached the Sumter American Legion Baseball Team to the State Championship in 1950 a well as the regionals in Charlotte, N. C. He was head baseball coach and assistant football coach for Eau Claire from 1955 to 1957 and then head baseball coach and assistant football coach from 1957 to 1976 at Camden High School. He assisted Red Lynch to Camden’s 1964 State Championship Football Team.

- The 1948 goal for the annual Easter Seal distribution by the Crippled Children society of South Carolina is $72,250, Executive Secretary Rabbi S. R. Shillman said. Of this amount, $2,500 has been set as the quota for the city and county of Sumter. The drive opened Sunday and will continue through March 28, Easter Sunday.
- H. N. Hutchinson Jr., assistant coach at Sumter High School and former Newberry College athlete, has been named field manager of the Sumter Palmetto League baseball team, it was announced by Hank Pontel, who is sponsoring the local team. Hutchinson, a lefthanded pitcher, is expected to be the No. 1 mounds man and when not pitching will probably be on first base or the outfield. [4, 5] |
