Date Published: March 18, 2009 ROBERT MOISE CHARLESTON -- Entered into eternal rest on Monday, March 16, 2009, Robert Blanding Moise, of Sumter and Charleston, widower of Ethel Claire McCutchen Moise, formerly of Sumter and Bishopville. Mr. Moise was a 1943 graduate of Clemson College. He was a company commander; a member of the Pershing Rifles precision drill platoon; sports editor of The Tiger; and captain of the Clemson varsity basketball team. He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran, having served in the Pacific Theater in the Marshall Island and attaining the rank of first lieutenant by war's end. He served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves at Shaw Air Force Base, retiring with the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was an early member of The Fortnightly Club of Sumter and was a writer for The Sumter Daily Item with a column, "Not That It Matters." He was an active part of the Sumter civic and business community, serving as a member of the Sumter Optimist Club and president of the Sumter County Historical Society, the Central Elementary School PTA and the Sumter County Zoning Board. He was a partner with his brother, Francis Marion Moise Jr., until his retirement in Moise Insurance Services and Moise Real Estate of Sumter. Mr. Moise was born Dec. 21, 1921, in Sumter, a son of the late Francis Marion Moise and Ella Pauline Blanding Moise. He was predeceased by brothers, McFaddin Moise and Francis Marion Moise Jr.; and a sister, Pauline McFaddin Moise Harritt. His two surviving brothers are James DeLeon Moise of Stateburg and Francis David Moise of Dallas; and he is survived by his children, Ben and Anne Moise, Scott Moise and Bailey Crump of Charleston, Warren and Lucie Moise of Mount Pleasant, Michael and Teresa Moise of Loris and Claire Moise and Bill Thorpe of Columbia. Mr. Moise had five grandchildren, Melissa McLeod of St. Matthews, Sarah Moise Young of San Francisco, Michael Moise Jr. of Orinda, Calif., David Crump of Charleston and Bracey Moise of Mount Pleasant; and three great-grandchildren, Margaret Anne and Sarah Elizabeth McLeod of St. Matthews and Michael Andrew Moise of Orinda. Services will be graveside at 1 p.m. Thursday at the the Bishopville Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 215 S. Main St., Bishopville, with Dr. Timothy Osment, pastor of Loris Presbyterian Church, officiating. Memorials may be made to the Clemson University Foundation, P.O. Box 1889, Clemson, SC 29633-1889.
