Moise (Tippy), at his side. He was born in Sumter in 1926 to the late Francis Marion Moise Sr. and Ella Pauline Blanding Moi se. Jim was 90 years old and fell victim to Alzheimer's, which ultimately led to his passing. Jim is survived by his wife of 67 years, Catherine V. Moise; daughter Mary M. Clark and her husband, David M. Clark, of Greenville; sons James D. Moise Jr. of Irvine, California, and John V. Moise and his wife, Linda D. Moise, of Winter Springs, Florida; along with four grandchildren, Lindsey C. Moise, John T. Moise, Hilary C. Moise and her husband, Michael G. Winslow, and Aaron J. Moise; his great-grandson, Davis J. Winslow; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers McFaddin Moise, Francis Marion Moise Jr. and Robert Blanding Moise; and his sister Pauline McFaddin Moise Harritt. He is survived by Francis Davis Moise of Dallas, Texas. Jim grew up in Sumter, was baptized at the Presbyterian Church and graduated from Edmunds High School in Sumter, where he played football and basketball and was the school sports editor and student body vice president. In 1943, he was awarded one of only two Congressional Navy V-12, ROTC appointments available to South Carolina high school students and attended the University of South Carolina where he distinguished himself as battalion commander, a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity and the Omicron Delta Kappa Society. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, class of 1947. Following graduation, Jim was hired by Westinghouse Electric Corp. in Washington, District of Columbia. Throughout his 37-year career with the company, he served in senior management roles across sales, marketing and manufacturing assignments with various global divisions of Westinghouse. During his first nine years with the company, Jim also served as an ensign in the Navy Reserves, resigning his commission in 1956. One of Jim's notable achievements came early in his career with Westinghouse. As he was a member of the Naval Academy of Architects, the company selected him to negotiate with the U.S. Navy Department in Washington, District of Columbia, specifically with Admiral Hyman G. Rickover (U.S.N., retired) to supply nuclear-powered turbines to what ultimately became the world's first nuclear-powered submarine, The Nautilus. The Nautilus would later be the first submarine to complete a submerged transit of the North Pole, from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. It was during this time that Jim met his wife, Catherine R. Vernon ("Tippy"), and they were married on May 20, 1950. In 1955, Jim was selected as one of 13 colleagues to participate in the Westinghouse Middle Management Training Program at The Harvard Business School, bringing Tippy and his first two children along with him to Cambridge, Massachusetts, and earning his MBA in 1956. During the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Longines-Wittnaurer Watch Co., a subsidiary of Westinghouse, was chosen as the official timekeeper for the games. Jim was selected to be on the Olympic Sponsor Committee as the Westinghouse representative. Jim was also very active in local community service, particularly while on assignment in Orange, California, where he served on the boards of The Orange Youth Employment Services, The Boy Scouts, The United Fund, the YMCA, the School Board Bond Campaign and as president of the Newport Harbor High School Football Boosters Club. In 1985, Jim retired as a senior executive from Westinghouse and returned to his native Sumter with Tippy. Jim often frequented the South Carolina beaches throughout his life and loved to swim in the ocean or go crabbing in the creek, especially with his children and grandchildren. He was also an avid gardener, college football fan and enjoyed playing golf. In the course of his life, Jim touched the lives of so many people with his gentle spirit, warm heart and willingness to help all those who extended a hand in need. It was often said that "Jim never met a stranger," and he willingly shared his delightful sense of humor. Above all, he was extraordinarily fond of and devoted to his family and dedicated to their happiness. A private graveside service will be held with Jim's wife, children and grandchildren presided over by the Rev. David Richardson. A memorial celebration will be announced at a later time. The family requests that in lieu of gifts or flowers that donations be made in Jim Moise's name to Alzheimer's Disease Research, 22512 Gateway Center Drive, Clarksburg, Maryland, 20871.
