COOPER NORTH CHARLESTON -- Jean Grimball Witherspoon Cooper, 92, former longtime resident of Hanahan, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, in Presbyterian Village. She was the wife of the late William W. Cooper. A native of Mayesville, she was born on June 18, 1916, the youngest of seven children of the late Hugh and Eva Williams Witherspoon. She was a founding and charter member of Yeamans Park Presbyterian Church in Hanahan, where she had been active in all aspects of church life. She was a 1938 graduate of Columbia College and taught for 30 years in South Carolina schools, the last 21 of which were in Berkeley County. She was named Berkeley County teacher of the year in 1972, as well as a South Carolina outstanding teacher for the same year. She was a former member of Alpha Kappa Gamma and Kappa Kappa Iota, professional teaching organizations. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Chuck Welty of Summerville; son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Sarah Cooper of Port St. Joe, Fla.; grandson, Ben Welty of Lawrence, Kan.; step-grandson, Kevin Welty of Summerville; and a large extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert Witherspoon, J. Hayne Witherspoon, Benjamin Witherspoon and Jim Hugh Witherspoon; and sisters, Elizabeth Witherspoon Blackwell and Carol Witherspoon Sutherland. The family received friends Wednesday at J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Northwoods Chapel, North Charleston. A funeral service was held Thursday at Yeamans Park Presbyterian Church, Hanahan. Interment will be held at 2 p.m. today at Mayesville Black River Cemetery, Highway 76, Mayesville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Yeamans Park Presbyterian Church, 5931 Murray Blvd., Hanahan, SC 29410 or to The Presbyterian Village, 201 W. 9th North St., Summerville, SC 29483. The family would like to express its sincere gratitude for the love and support of Mrs. Cooper's many friends and loved ones.
