| HIST | A father and son are dead here as the result of an automobile collision two miles north of town of Highway 1 Saturday at 9:20 a. m. ¶ W. H. Lance Sr., 79, died at 12:30 Saturday at a local hospital, and his son, Willard 42, who occupied the car with him at the time of the accident, died from injuries at the hospital at 4:45 a. m. Sunday. ¶ Three Negro occupants of the other car were injured, one taken to Floyd County Hospital, Rome, (Georgia). ¶ The car, driven by the Negroes, a 1950 model Buick, was headed south when the Lance car, a 1937 model Chevrolet, pulled into the road. There were no eye witnesses, but it is believed the Negro driver struck the Lance car on the wrong side of the road. The Lance Chevrolet was knocked completely from the road into a front yard of the home shown in photo, and the Buick turned completely around and headed back the way from which it had come still on the same side of the street. ¶ It was learned that Hoyt Strickland, for whom young Lance had been adjusting some tufting machines, had pushed the Lance car off to start the motor. However, he had returned to the sread shop when the crash occurred. It is believed the Lances parked a few moments to warm up the motor before pulling into the road. ¶ The elder Lance was a native of North Carolina, moving to Calhoun in 1925. at death he had 14 grandchildren William H. Lance, 79, and his son, Willard H. Lance, 42, both of Route 3, Calhoun, (Georgia) died last week-end following a traffic accident Saturday on Highway 41 north of Calhoun, (Georgia). Three Negroes were injured. ¶ The accident occurred when the automobile which the Lances occupied was pushed onto the highway, witnesses said. They told a Times reporter that the Lances’ car was stalled on the side of the road and another car was pushing it from the rear in an effort to start it. ¶ As the Lances’ car entered the highway, it collided with another car occupied by three Negroes. Benjamin Banion, of Dayton, Ohio, the driver, suffered slight cuts and bruises about the face; his mother, Clara Banion, of Toomsboro, received lacerations, a broken arm and leg, and the third occupant of the auto, Shirley Kitchens, suffered lacerations of the face and a broken arm. The Negroes were carried to Rome (Georgia) for treatment after receiving emergency aid at Johnston-Hall Hospital. ¶ Dr. W. D. Hall, hospital physician, told a TImes reporter by phone Saturday that he believed the elder Lance’s injuries were insufficient to have caused his death and that he probably died from a heart attack. He died shortly after noon Saturday. ¶ Willard Lance remained in serious condition in the local hospital until his death early Sunday morning. at death, he had 14 grandchildren Brief Life History of William Henry When William Henry Lance Sr was born about 1872, in Georgia, United States, his father, Andrew Jackson Lance, was 25 and his mother, Eliza Adaline Henson, was 15.
