| HIST | of Camden, South Carolina at death- he had many grandchildren- I don’t know who the parents are. jkh BEN NEWMAN Posted Wednesday, September 7, 2016 6:00 am CAMDEN - Funeral services to honor the life of Elbert Benjamin "Ben" Newman Sr., 93, of Camden, will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at First Baptist Church of Camden with burial to follow in Quaker Cemetery. The Rev. Bruce Hancock will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel. Memorials may be made in Mr. Newman's memory to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 1201 Broad St., Camden, SC 29020 or to charity of one's choice. Mr. Newman died on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2016. He was born in Sumter, a son of the late James Gatlin and Ella Yates Newman. He married Dorothy Jo Sewell on Feb. 15, 1946, in Sumter. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II; a member of the 511th paratroopers in the Pacific; and a recipient of the Purple Heart. Mr. Newman owned and operated Newman's Furniture Co. in Camden for more than 50 years. He was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church and a member of James Leroy Belk Post 17 of the American Legion. He loved to hunt and fish and loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy "Dot" Newman; daughter, Joan Ella N. Sheorn and her husband, Billy, of Camden; sons, Elbert Benjamin "Benny" Newman Jr. and his wife, Shirley, of Blythewood, and Kenneth Wayne "Kenny" Newman and his wife, Miriam, of Camden; grandchildren, Brett Ives of Lugoff, Lindsie Sheorn Hatfield (Charles) of Camden, Kristen Newman Huff (Matt) of Newnan, Georgia, Elise Newman Hatfield (Bobby) of Columbia, Jeremy Newman (Megan) of Norfolk, Virginia, Bryan Newman (Jessica) of Lugoff and Matthew Newman of Camden; step-grandchildren, Harriet Sheorn Jennings (Dell) of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and Neco Barnes (Shelley) of Ridgeway; 12 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; one step-great-great-grandchild; and numerous nephews and nieces. Special thanks to the staff of Karesh Long Term Care and Kershaw Health Hospice for their loving care of our daddy these past three months.
