The Sumter Item spoke this week with owners and project managers to get the latest scoop on franchises' projected openings. Here is what we found out ... Chick-fil-A (375 Pinewood Road) Another Chick-fil-A restaurant is on the fast track on the west side of the City of Sumter, but some might not know that it will be essentially drive-through only. Local Chick-fil-A franchise owner Scott Richardson said Friday that because of space limitations at the corner of Pinewood and McCrays Mill roads, the new restaurant will not be a full free-standing Chick-fil-A like the one at 1170 Broad St. However, a canopy-covered pickup area will be available outside if customers would like to park, walk up and place an order. Four picnic tables will also be on the property, he added. For new free-standing restaurants, Chick-fil-A's corporate offices now requires they be on at least two acres. The site at the intersection - which was formerly a Rite-Aid - has just 1.25 usable acres, Richardson said. The canopy pickup area will have four cash registers and multiple cashiers on site for patrons who park and walk up, he added. Two drive-through lanes will also be available. Customers will find the process similar to the free-standing Chick-fil-A on Broad, where patrons often walk in and stand in line for pickup, Richardson said. "Honestly, not really much different from Broad Street because we have two drive-through lanes there and then inside we have four registers right now," he said. "The difference is there is a dining area, and we will not have that due to the limited land space." Richardson said 70% of his business on Broad Street now is drive-through. About 20% is dine-in, and the remainder is catering and deliveries, he added. Richardson projects the 375 Pinewood Road location to open in mid-May. After the store is up and running, the site may look at offering mobile curbside pickup with runners as it did during COVID-19, but that service takes lots of coordination. Taco Bell (2036 McCrays Mill Road) Just down the road from the Chick-fil-A site is a new Taco Bell under construction on McCrays Mill. A Columbia-based developer over the project, Taylor Wolfe of Cason Development Group, spoke Thursday and said he projects the end of May or first half of June for the store opening. The new fast-food restaurant will be the third Taco Bell in Sumter. The other two chains are on Broad (1112 Broad St.) and in the downtown area (25 N. Lafayette Drive). Starbucks (2032 McCrays Mill Road) Next door to Taco Bell will be the area's second Starbucks as this general area continues to grow in some ways like a "second Broad Street" for Sumter. The original Starbucks for Sumter is at 1259 Broad St., near the Alice Drive intersection. Expect Starbucks to open in May, according to sources. Zaxby's (1128 Broad St.) An upgraded Zaxby's is projected to open soon on Broad, next to the former Zaxby's on Sumter's "restaurant row." Paving the expanded, new parking lot is next on the schedule as the project has been on a fast track since September. George Thistle, the construction project manager for the new franchise, said Friday on site that Sumterites could expect to see the restaurant open in the "upcoming weeks." Habit Burger Grill (1135 Broad St.) A California-style burger restaurant is coming to Sumter with Habit. Project manager Kerin Schweigert of Florida-based R.E.
