He was called to World War II active duty a few weeks after Pearl Harbor, and moved his family to the Washington, D.C. area. He served from December 1942 until August 1945 under General Patton with the 19th Tactical Air Command in Europe. He was involved in the planning of the Normandy Invasion. His unit was on its way to the Pacific Theatre when the war ended. After World War II, he continued reserve duty with the Air Force, serving with the Strategic Air Command, headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska, and rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel before retiring from reserve duty.
