In 1817, Thomas Edward Hart, of Society Hill, Darlington County, SC., purchased approximately 8,000 acres of land along Black Creek. He and his wife, Hannah Lide Hart, established their plantation along the cliffs of the Black Creek, where two public roads crossed (Today’s Carolina Avenue and Highway 151 Bypass). ¶ Hart opened a country store and a post office on his land. He was the first Postmaster, Commissioner of Free Schools, a merchant and a Captain in the South Carolina Militia. ¶ During the Depression of 1837-38, Captain Hart went bankrupt and was forced to sell his plantation. His son-in-law, Colonel Law, purchased his land. Captain Hart moved to Darlington, SC, while his estranged wife lived on the property until her death. ¶ In 1845, John Lide Hart, Captain Hart’s third son, purchased 491 acres of virgin pine forest from his brother-in-law, Colonel Law, where he established the Hart Plantation. This plantation is now downtown Hartsville, SC. John Hart constructed his home from pine trees on his property, the house is located on East Home Avenue in front of the First Baptist Church. He also established a carriage factory, a stream powered sawmill, grist mill, worker’s homes, a store, a post office, a school and a church (First Baptist Church). See Caleb Coker II for the next part of the story. [2] |
