| HIST | Teacher spotlight: Leon "Lee" Gandy, Alice Drive Middle School Leon "Lee" Gandy is the Alice Drive Middle School Teacher of the Year. He teachers sixth through eighth grade social studies. He began his teaching career in 2005 at Alice Drive Elementary School before moving to the middle school in 2011. Leon "Lee" Gandy is the Alice Drive Middle School Teacher of the Year. He teachers sixth through eighth grade social studies. He began his teaching career in 2005 at Alice Drive Elementary School before moving to the middle school in 2011. Gandy earned a bachelor of arts in education from University of South Carolina Upstate and has earned a bachelors plus 18 certification through courses taken at USC Aiken and the College of Charleston. He has taken classes for the Gifted and Talented endorsement, which allows teachers to teach in that program, at USC Aiken and Southern Wesleyan University. He is a National Board Certified teacher. He participated in the Teaching American History grant, an intensive program of study and hands-on experiences, from 2010 through 2013. He has also presented at in-service trainings regarding the implementation of common core standards in social studies. Gandy is a member of the Palmetto State Teachers Association and serves on the district’s Teacher Advisory Council. He is an assistant youth leader at Bethesda Church of God and works with Children’s Church, Vacation Bible School and weekly Bible studies. He assists with the Teacher Cadet program at Sumter High School by having practicum students in his classroom. He is past president of the Alice Drive Elementary Parent Teacher Association and serves as the “Voice of the Hawks” at Alice Drive Middle football games. When asked about his thoughts on his profession, he said, "I strive to be a teacher who my students will always remember because I made history come to life for them. I love history, I love teaching, and I love my kids.
