Logan and Janet Logan take a look at one of the refrigerators likely headed for Logan's Appliances in Camden if it is not sold before the Bishopville store closes on Dec. 31. J.R. Logan announced Friday he is retiring and closing the Bishopville store. BY RANDY BURNS Special to The Item BISHOPVILLE - New Year's Eve will mark the end of an important era in the life of Lee County. J.R. Logan, an Ashwood native and owner of Logan's Appliances since 1972, has decided to retire. Logan's Appliances will close its doors on Main Street in Bishopville at 1 p.m. on New Year's Eve. "It's the right thing to do," Logan said. "It's not been an easy decision. It's going to be hard not coming in here every day. But I want this to be an upbeat, positive story. I want the people of Lee County to know Logan's Appliances will continue to serve them in Camden." His daughter Janet Logan and son Johnnie Logan are the co-owners of Logan's Appliances on 945 Broad St. in Camden. "We've been in Camden for 25 years, and we want the people of Bishopville and Lee County to call us if they need repairs or a new appliance," Janet said. J.R. Logan's wife, Judy, who has been a fixture at Logan's since 1988, said she is happily anticipating "a life of relaxation." "We are in the winter of life. We want to relax, travel and do what we want to do," Judy said. "We are going to miss the people. That's going to be the hardest part." A 1958 graduate of Ashwood High School, J.R. Logan was raised on a farm with 13 brothers and sisters. "I grew up picking cotton on a farm," he said. "I didn't know anything about appliances." Logan recalls his first experience repairing and selling appliances at the Firestone store operated by James Davis and Joe Kelley. "The service man was sick and in the hospital," Logan said. "They were getting a lot of calls from customers needing their appliances repaired. James Davis gave me $20 and told me to get some tools and check this woman's washing machine. Well, I didn't know anything about repairing appliances. I went and got some tools. I took a look at the machine, and took the part out that I thought was bad. I took it and the tools to the hospital. The service man put everything on his (food) tray, and he showed me how to fix it right there in the hospital." Logan worked as a repairman and retail clerk at Appliance and TV Center in Sumter for seven years before opening his own business in Bishopville. "I decided to go in business for myself," he said. "And it's been a good decision. Bishopville has been good to me." Logan said he owes a "tremendous debt" to the people of Lee County. "I want to thank our customers and employees," he said. "My goal was to be a millionaire, but I didn't quite make it. We still did good." While Logan fell short of his goal, he and his wife have been able to support a family of three sons and a daughter. And the success of the business has enabled the couple to travel the world, he said. The Logans have been able to "go on free vacations" to places such as London, Montreal, Hawaii, Mexico City, Lake Tahoe, Las Vegas, Switzerland and Germany. "We've been able to do this because of our customers," he said. "If we weren't making our quotas, we would have never been able to go to these places." Judy Logan said they have met some interesting people in their travels. "J.R. got a kiss from Vanna White, and I got a hug from the Maytag repairman," she said. "That don't sound exactly equal, does it?" Logan said he will always treasure the memories. "I can tell some stories," Logan said. "It's been stressful at times. But there are a lot of great memories." Janet Logan said customers, employees and friends of Logan's Appliances are invited to visit the business' page on Facebook. Janet said she and her brother are determined to continue the legacy of the business established by her father. "I think what my Momma and Daddy taught us is that you work hard every day," she said. "Some days you won't feel like it, but people will respect you for working hard. And you have to be honest and treat people with respect. Always treat customers like you want to be treated, and they will come back. I've been in business long enough in Camden to see the children of my customers become my customers." "I don't think of this as Logan's Appliances closing," J.R. Logan said. "Logan's Appliance Center will continue to serve the people of Lee County in Camden. Johnnie and Janet still live in Lee County. These are Lee County people operating a business in Camden." Posted in Local news, News on Saturday, December 17, 2011 [3] | |
