France at that time was not safe for persons having ‘de’ affixed to their names.” The will for Marie Magdalene Hortensia can be viewed in source- Since I'm interested in ancestry, when we were in Austin, Texas, a few weeks ago, I wanted to visit my great-great-great grandmother's gravesite and take a picture of the headstone. Unfortunately, we were unable to find it. Marie Magdalene Hortensia DeLorme (born de la Ramée) was born in 1762 in Caen, France (Calvados region of Normandy). She married Jean Francois (John Francis) DeLorme in 1787 in France, where 2 of their 10 children were born. They came to Philadelphia in 1790, where he was a furniture maker and upholsterer. They soon moved to Charleston, SC, where he prospered in that trade, as French styles were popular then. He bought and sold property and his sons took over the furniture business. Over the years they lived in Sumter and Columbia, SC, Augusta, Ga. and Austin, Texas. Texas was granting land to settlers to encourage development and at age 78, he and Hortensia, 77, went out to claim their 640 acre stake. It was in San Patricio County bordering the Nueces River. She passed away in Austin at 78 and the claim reverted back to Texas, as they had done nothing with it. She must have been a strong woman to do all that traveling back then. She made a return trip to France once and several to Cuba during her lifetime. I was discussing this with my cousin, Jackie Hughes, who is a genealogist and a historian, and she gave me a book called "DeLormes of South Carolina (some Brittons & Haynsworths and a few Doves)" by Cecil Brux DeLorme. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading it and want to thank her kindly. Since our son, Jacob, lives in Austin and if we ever locate her grave, he can send me a picture of it. It wasn't listed on Findagrave.com, or Ancestry.com, but we're hopeful we can find it. The author of the book wasn't able to find it either, but we'll keep trying.  [8, 9, 10]
