The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Miss Player passed away on Saturday, March 24, 2012, at Palmetto Health Richland hospital. Born Feb. 23, 1933, near Elliott, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Cleland Blain "Pete" and Elizabeth Coskrey Player. She graduated from Mayesville High School. In 1955, she received a bachelor of science degree in public music from Winthrop College, Rock Hill. Following a first job as music teacher, choir director and organist at Epworth Children's Home, she was encouraged to seek a master of science in social work, which she received from the School of Social Work at the Richmond Professional Institute of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va., in 1958. Among her civic accomplishments, Ernestine was instrumental in establishing a graduate school of social work at the University of South Carolina. She had been honored and named by the University of South Carolina as a pioneer in social work in South Carolina. She was presented with a lifetime achievement award from the National Association of Social Work. She was also recognized by her beloved Winthrop University with the Outstanding Alumni Professional Achievement Award. Miss Player served as a speaker at the National Association of Social Workers and served as a consultant to other states in the field of social work. She retired as the state director of Public Health Social Work. As an active member of Windsor United Methodist Church, she established a classic group, served as a Sunday school teacher, directed a youth choir, led a disciple's group, and planned and directed retreats. Several times she served as a delegate from her church to the South Carolina United Methodist Conference. Among her leisure activities, Ernestine enjoyed playing bridge with a long time group of friends, watching sports games, reading, needlework and cooking. A lifelong lover of animals, a picture of Ernestine's dog, Lizzie, retrieving at Black River, appears in the book, "The Boykin Spaniel ... South Carolina's Dog." Lizzie was a Boykin Spaniel breed, the state dog of South Carolina. Surviving are sister, Betty Jean Player Aston of Latta; sister-in-law, Nelle Player of Bishopville; nieces, Libby Aston of Fremont, Calif., and Marie (Jake) Player Smith of Bishopville; nephews, Jim (Carol) Aston of Greenville, Pete (Marie) Player of Bishopville, Bill (Lisa) Aston of Latta and Kirby (Marilyn) Player of Clemson; and eight great-nieces and nephews.
