He enlisted at Sumter for State duty 8 Apr 1861; mustered into Confederate service on 23 May 1861, reported on muster roll of 1 May 1862 as in hospital in Richmond, Virginia, not on any subsequent availabel muster rool. John went with Company D (Sumter Volunteers), Second Regiment, to Morris Island at Charleston, South Carolina, reaching there while the bombardment of Ft. Sumter was still in progress, but not early enough to take active part in the battle. After about two weeks, his Company was ordered to Virginia under Col. Kershaw. From, “History of Kershaw’s Brigade” by D. Augustus Dickert, we know that the Second and Eight Regiments camped for a while at Germantown, North Carolina, and soon the whole Brigade was between Fairfax and Bull Run. [3] |
