Retired U. S. Air Force He was base commander of Shaw Air Force Base when he retired after 32 years of service. He was a fighter pilot who served in World War II and Vietnam, and was awarded the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star, and the Air Medal with Clusters. He was the commander of 50 F-105 Thunderchiefs for the fly-by for President Kennedy’s funeral in 1963. Paul went from squadron commander to wing commander. In 1970, the family moved to Spain as Paul, now a colonel, became the wing commander at Zaragoza Air Base. [1, 2] |
