| HIST | of Sumter, South Carolina Howard E. Whitehead Sr. Howard Eugene “Gene” or “Rank” Whitehead Sr., 88, husband of Esther H. Whitehead, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2012, at his home. Born in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late John Henry and Ethel Mims Whitehead. Mr. Whitehead was a member of Swan Lake Presbyterian Church, the American Legion, the Elks Lodge, the Sumter Historical Society, and the Lions Club in Bishopville. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He retired from Carolina Power and Light Co. after 40 years of service. Survivors include his wife of Sumter; five children, Howard Eugene Whitehead Jr. (Karen) of Beaufort, Deborah Ann Whitehead of Sumter, Edward C. “Tripp” Baker III (Wanda) of Sumter, Erica Leigh Dollard (John) of Sumter and Amanda B. Valenzuela (Mike) of Sumter; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister-in-law, Shirley C. Whitehead of Effingham; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Henrietta Timmons Whitehead; a son, Henry Timmons Whitehead; and a brother, Elwood Ivey Whitehead. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Sammy Geddings and Chuck Staggs officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home. Memorials may be made to the SPCA, 1140 S. Guignard Drive, Sumter, SC 29150; Hospice of Tri-County, 2560 Tahoe Drive, Sumter, SC 29150; or to Swan Lake Presbyterian Church, 912 Haynsworth St., Sumter, SC 29150.
