| HIST | of Columbia, South Carolina at death- she had grandchildren and great-grandchildren- where do they go? jkh Mary Ellen Dent Rutledge Mary Ellen "Pinkie" Dent Rutledge COLUMBIA - Memorial service for Mary Ellen "Pinkie" Dent Rutledge, 89, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at Northeast Presbyterian Church. A private family burial will be held earlier in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:30 p.m. prior to the memorial service. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Mrs. Rutledge died Monday, October 28, 2013. Born in Dallas, Texas and reared in the Highland Park area, she was a daughter of the late Charles Rolfe and Grace Jalonick Dent. She attended the University of Alabama and Lindenwood School in St. Louis. She was a devoted wife to Frederick Rutledge, having married on March 4, 1949. She was especially proud of the Jalonick family who founded Republic and Southwestern Life Insurance Companies. She was a faithful member of Northeast Presbyterian Church and the Polo Ridge Book Club. She was a former member of Larkspur Garden Club and Wildewood Garden Club, as well as a former member of Forest Lake Country Club, Asheville County Club and Biltmore Forest Country Club. Not only was Mom the most loving, caring, and giving person on the planet, but she always put everyone else's feelings and problems before her own issues. Her smiles and her positive outlook were contagious and she always put everyone around her at peace! If ever there was a more compassionate person on this earth, I never met them! Her last words spoken after every time we visited with her at Wildewood Downs was: "I love you more than you'll ever know". Nothing delighted her more than the daily visits from family and friends, except maybe the occasional appearance of her beloved cat, "Biscuit." Mom loved all creatures on the earth, especially the butterflies that frequented her gorgeous flower gardens surrounding her home. She will be missed by all, but we know she is at peace and in a much better place with her beloved husband of 60 years-our Father Fred. She is survived by her sons, Edward Rutledge (Belinda Corbett) of Blythewood, Charles Rolfe Rutledge (Robin Abrams) of Blythewood; daughter, Caroline Rutledge (Kenneth Park) of Santa Barbara, Calif.; grandchildren, William Alexander Julian of Santa Barbara, Heather Rembert Brooks Ferguson (Sean Darrah) of Playa Vista, Calif., Elizabeth Leigh Rutledge Stallings (Page) of Charlotte, N.C., Joseph Reeves Rutledge (Kristen Demars) of Columbia, Christopher Reeves Rutledge (Jennifer Dwyer) of Goose Creek, Sterling Robinson Rutledge of Columbia; great-grandchildren, Liza Edgerton Stallings, Clare Rutledge Stallings, both of Charlotte, Landon Reeves Rutledge, Logan Ryan Rutledge, both of Goose Creek, Emmy Lillian Rutledge of Columbia. She was predeceased by her husband, Frederick Reeves Rutledge. Memorials may be made to Northeast Presbyterian Church, 601 Polo Road, Columbia, SC 29223. Alex Julian, III, of Santa Barbara, CA (b. 12/19/63). My father is Dr. W.A.Julian, II, of Charlottesville, VA (b. 1/27/43). My mother is Caroline Rutledge (b. 7/29/44). Her biological father was Rex Edwards (of Mobile, Alabama, I believe. Died about 1970??; I'm guessing Mary Ellen "Pinkie" (Dent-Edwards Rutledge met him while at U.Alabama). Pinkie & Rex divorced, and she & my mom (Caroline) returned 'home' to 3848 Potomac Ave., Highland Park, (Dallas)TX to live with Grace Jalonick Dent in the home Chas. R. Dent built (c.1920), where I also grew up with Grace ("Gom"/Gommy) Dent and my mother (1960s-70s). Frederick Reeves Rutledge, Jr., rented the servants' quarters after WW2. Pinkie & Fred married in '49, apparently. Fred adopted Caroline. Then my favorite uncles, Edward Rutledge, and Chas. Rolfe Rutledge were born. Fred (unlike Rex Edwards) and despite Caroline's rebellious nature, loved me and treated me as his own grandchild. In fact, I moved to Biltmore Forest/Asheville, NC, while still a teenager and lived with Fred & Pinkie until 1986. In hindsight, I'm guessing most of the statement above is useless, in terms of making your database more accurate, and for all I know, as far as geneology is concerned, you may be listing me and my antecedents technically correctly. I honestly don't know the mechanics, semantics, or terminology. In any event, thank for the opportunity to express myself. Respectfully and humbly, Alex Julian (William Alexander Julian, III, P.E.) Post Script: 'Ken'neth Woodrow Park, Jr., is Caroline's 3rd husband (m.2003). Gary Berkhalter Ferguson, Brooks Ferguson's (Sean Darrah) father, is Caroline's 2nd husband (m.1967).
