| HIST | formerly of Sumter, South Carolina Date Published: November 4, 2009 MARY LEIGH B. OTEY CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Mary Leigh Burleson Otey, formerly of Sumter, died Oct. 31, 2009, in Charlotte. Mary Leigh, age 91, was born Nov. 4, 1917, in Dallas, Texas, a daughter of the late Wade and Ethlyn Stokes Burleson. She was a graduate of the University of Michigan, and a proud sister of Alpha Omicron Pi. Mary Leigh had lived in Charlotte since 1956 and was preceded in death by her husband, Kirkwood "Pete" Otey III, and by her mother-in-law, Pretto Brunson. Mary Leigh is survived by her son, Kirkwood Otey IV of Charlotte; her daughter, Leigh Otey Cortez and husband, retired U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Chris Ortez, of Carlsbad, Calif.; and son, Wade Burleson Otey and his wife, Peggy, of Charlotte. Mary Leigh was the loving "Grandy" to her five grandchildren, U.S. Navy Lt. Christopher Cortez of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Virginia "Gini" Cortez of San Francisco, Calif., Leigh Otey of Washington, D.C., Tommy Otey of Asheville, N.C., and Katherine "Kat" Otey of New York City. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Pretto Cuttino of Sumter, and three nephews. Mary Leigh hosted a two-week family beach trip each summer where her five grandchildren were the center of attention. She regaled them with stories of her many travels to Japan, Thailand, Australia, India, China, and most of Europe, filling in the gaps from her background as a geography major at Michigan. Mary Leigh had lived at Southminster Retirement Community for the past eight years, where she loved to play bridge and read. She will be remembered by her quick wit, sense of humor, and joy in making new friends. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Chapel at Southminster Retirement Community, 8919 Park Road, Charlotte, with a reception to follow in the lounge. Interment will be private. Being a 50+ year survivor of breast cancer, Mary Leigh requested, in lieu of flowers, that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Southminster Foundation, 8919 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28210. Harry & Bryant Company is serving the family. [1] | |
