| HIST | EDGAR B. THOMPSON MANNING - Edgar Birdell Thompson, 85, husband of Jean Herrin Thompson, passed away on Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at Colleton County Hospital in Walterboro. Born Oct. 3, 1924, in Birmingham, Ala., he was a son of the late Leslie B. and Pearl Morris Thompson. He was a graduate of Auburn University. He was employed by Bell South Telephone Co. for 35 years, having retired in December of 1983; served in the Merchant Marine Cadet Corps, 2nd Lieutenant; Corps of Engineers, Army of the United States; entry into Merchant Marines on Aug. 1, 1944; initial entry into active service in the United States Army on June 15, 1946; Reserve Commissioned Officer in the Army of the United States; recipient of the World War II Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal Japan. He was active in many community organizations and clubs to include Civitan, Lions Club (where he served as past president in Santee), Rotary Club and president of the Chamber of Commerce Flo,, 1973. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Manning. Survivors in addition to his wife of Manning are three daughters, Katherine L. Thompson of Columbia, Rebecca L. Haynes of Florence and Amanda F. Singleton of Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren, Christopher Haynes of Columbia and Lauren Haynes of Florence; a stepson, John W. Keitt III of Pickens; five step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Leslie Morris Thompson of Birmingham. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Jerry Cottone and the Rev. Debra Quilling-Smith officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service at Stephens Funeral Home. Burial will be private. Pallbearers will be Gary Martin, Johnny Odom, L.W. "Dub" Taylor, Dr. H.P. "Mutt" Bozard, Artie Felder and Bobby Wilder. Honorary pallbearers will be P.T. Bradham Sunday School Class of Manning First Baptist Church and the Manning Rotary Club. Memorials may be made to Southern Care Hospice, 217 Dozier Blvd., Suite 201, Florence, SC 29501; Alzheimers Association, S.C.
