WHITEHEAD EFFINGHAM - Elwood Ivy Whitehead, 82, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010, in a local hospital after an illness. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Elim Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Waters-Powell Funeral Home in Florence. He was born in Sumter County, a son of the late John and Ethel Mims Whitehead. Mr. Whitehead was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a retired contractor. Mr. Whitehead was a member of Elim Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon. Survivors include his beloved wife of 57 years, Shirley Carter Whitehead of the home; two daughters, Sheryl W. (Lawton) Evans and Lisa W. McClure, both of Effingham; three sons, Mitchell (Gayle) Whitehead, Ken (Belinda) Whitehead and Danny (Holly) Whitehead, all of Effingham; brother, Eugene (Esther) Whitehead of Sumter; four granddaughters, Kimberly (Josh) Canup, Kenzie Whitehead, Lauren McClure and Ivy Whitehead; four grandsons, Michael Whitehead, Carter Evans, Ryan McClure and Harper Whitehead; one great-grandson, Lucas Canup; a nephew, Howard (Karen) Whitehead; and two nieces, Debbie Whitehead and Robin Whitehead. Memorials may be made to the Brotherhood of Elim Baptist Church, 1303 Olanta Highway, Effingham, SC 29541. The family of Mr. Whitehead would like to thank Dr. Reidy and all the nurses on the eighth floor and SICU at Carolinas Hospital System for their kindness and compassion. Waters-Powell Funeral Home of Florence is in charge of arrangements. ALEXANDER NEAL Jr. Alexander Neal Jr., husband of Ruth Neal, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010, at the Dorn VA Medical Center. He was a son of the late Alexander Sr. and Daisy Neal. The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, 85 W. Fulton St., Sumter. Parking will be at 530 S.
