| HIST | of Alcolu, South Carolina John A. Shirer ALCOLU -- John Alexander "Alex" Shirer, 60, went to his heavenly home on Sunday, March 11, 2012, surrounded by his loving family. He NEVER gave up in his battle with cancer, until the Lord decided it was time. Alex's contagious smile, eagerness to show his love to others, and unbridled courage touched the hearts of many. He was born May 6, 1951, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital. Alex was the second baby born in this hospital. He was the only son of the late John Alexander "Jack" Shirer and Vivienne Waits Shirer. He was a graduate of Manning Christian Academy, formerly at First Baptist Church in Manning, where he met the love of his life, his wife of 37 years, Rosanna Russell Shirer. He was also a graduate of Highway Patrol School. Alex was a member of Fraser Memorial Presbyterian Church, where he served in many capacities, until he was no longer physically able, these include greeter, Sunday school superintendent, usher, and elder. He left to also cherish his memory: a son, Russell Jarrett Shirer; a daughter, Lacie Dianne Shirer Cannon and son-in-law, Jeremy Blaine Cannon; and the other love of his life, a grandson, Jeremy "Blaine" Cannon Jr., or as he used to call him, his "little man." He was privileged to have many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who were like family and loved him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved big sister, Dianne Shirer Hodge. A celebration of Alex's life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael A. Baynai officiating. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the residence, 1577 Galloway Road, Alcolu. The family expresses its deep gratitude to Dr. Pierre Giglio, Katrina Mrugala and Christine Graham of MUSC; his sitter and companion, Terrance Lee; as well as Tysha, Cheri, Brittney, Melissa and Irene of Caris Hospice. They not only cared for Alex, but also his family, during his cancer journey. Memorials may be made to Fraser Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1746 U.S. 521 South, Sumter, SC 29153 or to Caris Healthcare (helps support children's hospice in Ethiopia), 246 Broad St., Sumter, SC 29150.
