Elease Bennett Hastie entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at Lake Marion Nursing Home. She was born Oct. 6, 1922, to the late Wesley and Rosa Kelly Felder Bennett. Mrs. Hastie attended the public schools of Sumter County. At an early age, she joined Calvary Baptist Church in Pinewood. She married the late Woodrow Hastie Sr. on Feb. 1, 1942. In the 1950s, she moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., and worked for many years as a seamstress. In Brooklyn, she joined Concord Baptist Church of Christ, where she worked and served faithfully. After many years, she relocated to Sumter. Her legacy will continue through her loving family: four sons, Jerome (Myrtle) Hastie of Clinton, Md., Wesley Hastie and Woodrow (Roberta) Hastie Jr. of Sumter, and William (Emma) Hastie of Deltona, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Mary Hastie of College Park, Ga.; two sisters, Katie (Joe) Osorio and Dorothy (James) Myers of Sumter; two brothers, Bobby Bennett and the Rev. Neal (Janie) Bennett, and two sisters-in-law, Mary L. Bennett and Margaret Bennett, all of Baltimore, Md.; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by a son, Samuel Hastie; five brothers; and two sisters. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, U.S. 15 South, Sumter, with the Rev. Willie Wright, pastor, the Rev. Dr. James Blassingame, officiating, and the Rev. Tia Farmer. Burial will be in Calvary-Zion Hill Church cemetery. Visitation will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. The remains will be placed in the church an hour before the service Monday. The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home of her son, Woodrow (Roberta) Hastie, 2960 Tindal Road, Sumter, where the procession will leave at 9:15 a.m. Monday.
