| HIST | Ernest Henderson Sr. | Visit Guest Book COLUMBIA - Funeral services for Tuskegee Airman Ernest Henderson, Sr. will be held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the St. John Baptist Church, 3404 West Beltline Boulevard, Columbia with burial in the Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held this evening beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Ernest Henderson, Sr., formerly a resident of Columbia, South Carolina, died May 11, 2011 in Charlotte, North Carolina. In 2000, he was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Ophelia P. Henderson. Ernest was born in Mountville, South Carolia to James and Ella Henderson, and was raised on a 'two-horse' farm in Laurens County. He graduated from Bell Street High School in Clinton, South Carolina, and attended Hampton Institute from 1937 to 1941. he then entered the Civilian Pilot Training Program and joined the Army Air Corps Pilot/Flight Instructor Group, who trained the legendary Tuskegee Airmen. His trainees later comprised the famous All-Black 99th Pursuit Squadron, who made history in aerial combat in the European Theater in World War II. He is a member of the South Carolina Aviation Hall of Fame, and his meritorious work was cited in the United States Congressional Record. After his service at Tuskegee, he moved with his family to Columbia, South Carolina, where he became owner and operator of a dry cleaning business. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree at Benedict College in Columbia; his Master of Education degree at the University of Wisconsin, and studied further at the University of South Carolina and at Duke University. Mr. Henderson was an educator in Richland County for 21 years. He served as a classroom teacher, business manager, guidance counselor, and assistant principal. After he retired, he served his community as a member of the Columbia Metropolitan Airport Advisory Committee, and he was on the board of Adjustments and Appeals for the City of Columbia. He took great pleasure in serving as a Meals-on-Wheels driver, and later, giving inspirational talks to young people in the Charlotte schools. He was a member and Deacon of the St. John Baptist Church in Columbia. Mr. Henderson was a dedicated member of the Masonic Order and a Past Master of the Corinthian Lodge #11. He was a Past-Commander-in-Chief of CC Johnson Consistory #136. He was Past Deputy of the Orient of the State of South Carolina, and was a Sovereign Grand Inspector General of the United Supreme Council. He served as Grand Lecturer for the State of South Carolina, Prince Hall Alliliate, and he achieved the Thirty-third and Last Degree.
