The store is lined wall-to-wall with fabrics. Posted: Sunday, July 31, 2011 6:00 am | Updated: 9:57 pm, Fri Jul 29, 2011. BY COREY DAVIS cdavis@theitem.com It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to run a successful business. Billy and Kitty Caples, married for 47 years, must put in three times the hard work and dedication because they have three businesses in town - a fabric shop, a maternity and children's clothing store and an auto body shop. Kitty Caples, 61, opened a new fabric store June 29 called Miss Kitty's Fabric and More at 532 Bultman Drive. She said she wants to give the women in the area a place to go and buy fabric. "There was nowhere for ladies to buy threads or zippers. They had to go to Florence or Columbia to buy the material," the Sumter native said. "I put a little ad in the paper and asked the ladies whether they would be interested in a fabric store coming to town. I couldn't have a lot of inventory, but I planned on opening up a medium-sized store, and I got over 200 calls. The feedback gave me the confidence to open it, along with the Lord helping me." Caples said the store offers many types of affordably priced fabric, including fleece used to make blankets, cotton material for quilts and camouflage fabric to make nets for tents. Her help at the store includes customer representative Chris Anderson and Carol Cunningham, a former fabric cutter at Walmart. "I don't know much about fabric, but I've got good people with me that do," Caples said. Caples said that Melody Brown, who works as the bookkeeper for the couple's businesses, has been a vital part in the stability of all three businesses. "She does a great job in keeping things in order," Caples said. "Without her, I don't think any of our businesses would survive." Customer Ann Phillips was at the store Tuesday morning shopping for fabric. Phillips is part of the Swan Lake Quilt Guild that meets every second Monday of the month. Phillips is elated about Caples' bringing a fabric store to Sumter and plans to be a regular customer. "I'm really happy that she decided to open a fabric store, and we have really needed a store like this," Phillips said. "The quality of fabric here is fabulous." OTHER BUSINESSES A few stores down from the fabric store is Miss Kitty's Children's and Maternity Wonderland, which has been open since March of 2009. Caples took over the store when Alice Robertson, who ran it previously, closed her store that same year. Caples said it was important to keep the name Maternity Wonderland because it was an established name in the area. Last month, she handed the business over to daughter Robin Caples Geddins, who spent the past 10 years as a medical assistant coordinator for orthopedist Dr. Danny Ford. "It was hard leaving Dr. Ford and leaving my patients because they all were great people to work with," Geddins said. "But I'm happy to be helping my mom and helping the children and maternity store be successful." Caples said that quality customer service and material has helped the store thrive. "I think we do a good job greeting and treating our customers like they are friends," Caples said. "With our items, we don't have the same old thing over and over like the other big stores in the area. We have different and unique items that customers are thrilled to see." HUSBAND'S BUSINESS VENTURE Before becoming an entrepreneur, Caples helped her husband, Billy Caples, start his body shop business. The 65-year-old has been the owner of Pro Glo Auto Body Collision Center since October of 1981. "It has been enjoyable," the Lee County native said. "With any business, you're going to have your ups and downs. However, we've been blessed to have been around for a good long time." Before opening his body shop, Caples spent a combined 18 years at Love Chevrolet and Jones Chevrolet. He said the longevity of his body shop is because of good customers and dedicated employees. "I thank God for our customers, which have kept our business to be able to survive. We also have good employees that have been there for a long time, which are like family. They are hardworking people, and without them we couldn't have survived." Caples' son, Billy Caples Jr., runs the day-to-day operations, he added. Caples' youngest son, Terry, and his wife, Peggy, own and operate Southeast Auto Paint Body on Myrtle Beach Highway, which opened in 1993. Reach Corey Davis at (803) 774-1295.
