WEEKS Mary Ethel Witherspoon Weeks was a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and dear friend. She answered God's call to eternal rest on Saturday afternoon, March 25, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. She was a voice of inspiration and encouragement to all who came in contact with her and she will always be remembered as one of the pillars of the South Sumter community in the Hoyt Street area. Mary Ethel Weeks, affectionately referred to as "Mother," was born Sept. 11, 1906, in the Privateer section of Sumter County, the daughter of the late Mary Bracey Witherspoon (1872-1948) and the late Samuel Witherspoon (1871-1946). She completed first grade in 1912 at Murdock Elementary School, and second and third grades in 1913-1914 at Stone Hill Elementary School, where her favorite teacher was Mrs. Laverne. She went on to complete third through seventh grades 1915-1919 at Lincoln High School, where her favorite teachers were Mrs. Wilson, Mrs. Long and Professor Jones. In 1943, she worked at Tuomey Hospital in housekeeping and dietary, and as a nurse's assistant and operating room assistant. From 1946-1955, she was a domestic worker for several Sumter families. In 1955, she worked at Shaw Air Force Base for the Base Housing Department, from which she retired in 1974. She was joined in holy matrimony to the late John Williams from 1928 until his death in 1931. In 1932, she was joined in holy matrimony to the late Lewis Weeks Sr. and was faithfully devoted to him until his death in 1943. Early in life, she felt the need of a personal Lord and Savior. She attended Shiloh Baptist Church (now First Baptist Missionary Church) and later joined Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, during the pastorate of the late Dr. B.F. Weston, where she was a faithful member until death. At Jehovah, Mother Weeks worked in many church activities. She was an active member of the senior missionary society and took great care in tending the needs of the sick, shut in, and needy members. She sold chicken dinners and pies to help raise money for the current church sanctuary. She was also very active with the South Sumter Senior Citizens group that met regularly at the South Sumter Gymnasium. One of her favorite crafts was quilting. She is survived by three sons, Lewis Weeks Jr. (Sue Bell), Richard O. Weeks (Lillie) and Ernest Weeks of Sumter; three daughters, Virginia M. Rouse (David) of Plainsfield, N.J., Anna M. Hopkins of Sumter and Mary Alice Powell (Benjamin) of Irvington, N.J.; a dear and devoted sister-in-law, Mamie Witherspoon of Sumter; 35 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, devoted family and friends. She was preceded in death by seven brothers, Western Witherspoon, Richard Witherspoon, Rayford Witherspoon, Izell Witherspoon, Oliver Witherspoon, Ernest Witherspoon and Cephus Witherspoon; one daughter, Eartha Lee Weeks Brunson; and six grandchildren, Dwight Leon Brunson, Wanda Denise Weeks, Dennis Rouse, Douglas Weeks, Benjamin Powell Jr. and Dwayne Allen Weeks. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the pastor, the Rev. Dr. M.H. Newton, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Ricky S. Simmons, the Rev. Ellie Palmer, and the Rev. Larry C. Weston. Interment will follow in the Haynesworth Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Granddaughters and great-granddaughters will serve as floral bearers. The funeral cortege will leave the home, 1070 Concord Circle, at 1:10 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the building fund of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church in memory of Mary E. Weeks. The family will receive friends at the home of her son, Lewis (Sue Bell) Weeks Jr., 1070 Concord Circle, Sumter. Sumter Funeral Service is in charge of all arrangements.
