| HIST | of Turbeville, South Carolina 1 Dogwood St., Turbeville, South Carolina Peter Vincent Surette, Sr. August 26, 1939 - May 5, 2022 SUMMERTON - Peter Vincent Surette, Sr., departed this life peacefully at home after an extended illness on May 5, 2022. He was 82 years old. “Pete” (as he was known by family and friends) was born August 26, 1939 in Stoneham, Massachusetts, the only child of Edna Teresa McNeil and Emile Flavian Surette. After attending high school, Surette joined the United Stated Marine Corps and was stationed at Parris Island, SC, where he completed basic training. While stationed at Parris Island, he met and later married his wife of 61 years, Barbara Powell Surette of Turbeville, SC. Once his commitment to the Marine Corps was over, he served on the police force in Charleston, Turbeville (as chief), and Lake City, SC, until his retirement in 1994. Upon his retirement, he and his wife moved to the Goat Island Community in Summerton, SC, on Lake Marion. In Mr. Surette’s younger days, he was an avid and very talented swimmer who once qualified for the Olympics, but he enlisted in the Marine Corps instead. He enjoyed eating delicious Italian meals and seafood and loved boating on the lake with family and friends. His greatest love, outside his family, was logging hundreds of miles on his Harley Davidson motorcycle with his wife Barbara sitting behind him and taking road trips with their best friends who also loved riding Harleys. Mr. Surette is survived by his wife Barbara Powell Surette; his children, Frances S. McFaddin (Randy) of Sardinia, SC, Kathryn S. Spicer (Bill) of Hamilton, Ontario, Peter V. Surette, Jr. (Janene) of Manning, SC, and Becky L. Spivey (Rick) of Cades, SC; his five grandchildren, Megan S. Anderson (Warren), Grace Emily Surette, Jesse Alexander Surette, Sara Jane Spivey, D. Andrew Spivey (Sarah); and his first great-grandchild, Derry Frances Anderson, were his pride and joy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Eugene Aubrey McFaddin III. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 15, 2022, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Reverend Pat Goodwin officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 2 to 3 p.m. at Stephens Funeral Home. The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude and special thanks to Mr. Surette’s caregivers, Georganna, Sara, Betty Anne and Terry; and the members of Amedisys Hospice, Sue, Sheila, Brenda, Bridget and Beebe, who took care of Mr. Surette in his final days.
