| HIST | Joyce P. Greene PORTLAND, Ore. — Joyce Parris Greene was born April 6, 1924, in Spartanburg, to Thomas Herbert and Betty Louise Parris. She died Feb. 8, 2014. Her younger brother, H. Dean Parris, was always her best friend. Her father, a Baptist minister, was called to serve the church in Clyde, N.C., and it was there she met E.M. “Jack” Greene in the church where her father was pastor and his mother played the piano and organ. After two years together at Mars Hill College, Joyce and Jack were married by her father. Soon after, Jack left to serve overseas while Joyce remained in Clyde with their first child, Elaine. Upon his return, they lived briefly in Washington, D.C., where both worked for a time for the FBI. After their second child, Jerry, was born, Jack took a position with Southern Life Insurance Co. As son Eddie and daughter Karin joined the family, they eventually settled in Sumter, where they raised their four children. In 1990, following the loss of both sons and her husband of 50 years, Joyce independently sold her home in Sumter, packed up and moved to Portland to be with her daughters. She was a lifelong and very astute bridge player. Upon arriving in Portland, she immediately found her bridge group in Multnomah. It was there she met Charles Stariha, her dearest Charlie, her partner at bridge and in life for six years until his death in December 2012. Joyce will forever be remembered for her easy laughter, occasionally irreverent sense of humor, that little bit of Southern accent and the gracious, kind manner that she never lost. Her quiet strength throughout her life and through her losses is one of her greatest legacies. She was preceded in death by her husband, E.M. “Jack” Greene; her sons, Jerry W. Greene and E.M. “Eddie” Greene; and Charles Stariha. She is survived by her daughters, Elaine Zehntbauer of Portland and Karin (Greg) Thoman of Battleground, Wash.; her grandchildren, David (Nicole) Zehntbauer and Eric (Andria) Zehntbauer, both of Portland, Megan Thoman and Jake Thoman of Battleground, and Waylon Peebles and William Peebles of Cassatt; and her eight great-grandchildren. There will be a Celebration of Life at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 16, at Hearthstone at Murrayhill, 10880 SW Davies Road, Beaverton, OR 97008. Posted in Obituaries on Sunday, March 9, 2014 [1] | |
