RANDOLPH • 1935 - 2023 'He loved Sumter:' Longtime pastor, civil rights leader dies at 88 The Rev. William S. Randolph was pastor of First Baptist Missionary Church for 47 years. BRYN EDDY / THE SUMTER ITEM Posted Wednesday, September 27, 2023 6:00 am BY BRYN EDDY bryn@theitem.com "First of all, he was a Christian." City of Sumter councilman James B. Blassingame said this of his now-late uncle, the Rev. William Samuel Randolph. "He was a servant. A community servant," he said. "He loved Sumter." Randolph died at McLeod Hospice House in Florence on Sept. 17 at 88 years old. Originally from Anderson County, Randolph moved to Sumter to attend Morris College, and he was pastor of First Baptist Missionary Church for 47 years. He also owned and operated Randolph General Construction Co. And he was also a civil rights leader. The state supreme court case from 1961, State of South Carolina v. Willie Sam Randolph, was a big deal for the civil rights movement in Sumter. Randolph himself was arrested 11 times in the fight for equality, but he was also instrumental in charges being dropped for other local activists. "He was very adamant about equality for all citizens, especially those of color," Blassingame said. Randolph was on city council from 1987 to 2008 and was mayor pro tempore for 19 of those years. When he first ran for city council, Blassingame said his uncle asked him to be his campaign manager. "I said, 'I've never run a political campaign,' and he told me, 'I know you can do it,'" Blassingame recalled. "I'm humbled and honored to now occupy the seat he served in," he said. Randolph is survived by his wife of 63 years, Doris Alford Randolph, as well as eight siblings, two daughters, one son, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. [1, 2] | |
