Known for his outstanding business sense and strong leadership qualities, he served as a director of Duke Power Company, J. P. As did his father and grandfather before him, he provided invaluable guidance to Furman University through years of dedicated work on the Board of Trustees, including several years as chair. He received the honorary Doctor of Humanities from Furman University in 1999. He provided wise counsel and direction to many cultural and civic organizations, including the United Way of Greenville County, Greenville Hospital System, Greenville County and South Carolina Chambers of Commerce, the Greenville Symphony, the Greenville County Art Association, the Historic Greenville Foundation, the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education, and the South Carolina Foundation of Independent Colleges.
