FROM STAFF REPORTS The Sumter County Sheriff's Office is investigating a body found in the woods near Cane Savannah Road on Wednesday afternoon. Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis said members of the state Forestry Commission called law enforcement after they found a body in a wooded area about 1 p.m. Dennis said the body was that of a white, middle-aged woman. Information regarding the circumstances of her death and how long she had been in the wooded area were unavailable to The Item late Wednesday. As of 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dennis said the department had identified a person of interest in the case. Dennis said the department thinks foul play is involved in the death. Woman stabbed, left to die The body of Melissa Corley Haley, 33, was found by Foresty Commission workers while they were investigating a trash pile at Manchester State Forest. Samuel George Henderson was arrested and charged with murder Wednesday night after state Forestry Commission workers found the body of 33-year-old Melissa Corley Haley lying on the road while investigating a trash pile at Manchester State Forest. Michelle Henderson, 40, is charged with accessory to murder after the fact and is being held at Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center on a $25,000 surety bond. Investigators from the Sumter County Sheriff's Office believe she helped clean her husband Samuel George Henderson's pickup truck Wednesday morning. BY R. DARREN PRICE dprice@theitem.com Melissa Corley Haley was left to die. Her heart still beating, she was dumped from a truck on a dusty dirt road near Cane Savannah Road just before the morning sun rose over the pine trees of Manchester State Forest. She had just minutes to live; a three-inch blade, investigators think, had punctured her heart and lungs. She crawled. By the time state Forestry Commission workers found her about 1 p.m. Wednesday, the sun was well over head and she had stopped moving. Haley, 33, had multiple stab wounds on her chest and back. Truck tire tracks in the dirt led the Sumter County Sheriff's Office to a suspect. Samuel George Henderson, 40, of Sumter County, was arrested and charged with murder Wednesday night after Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis said investigators found evidence, including a "big pocket knife," linking him to Haley's death. "We found what we believe was blood on the weapon," he said. Dennis said Haley was last seen alive with Henderson about 6 that morning at Scooter's Lounge at 3880 Broad St., about four miles away from the crime scene. Haley went there after spending most of the night at Brewers Bar and Grill at 160 E. Wesmark Blvd. with friends. When her friends went home between 2 and 3 a.m., Dennis said she left Brewers, and ran into Henderson at the other nightclub. Dennis said the two were friends, but didn't expect to meet each other. Henderson and Haley were later seen leaving the bar together. She got in Henderson's truck, and wasn't seen again alive. Dennis said the department is investigating why she might have gotten into the truck. Dennis said Haley's cell phone helped lead them to a suspect, along with tracks that matched the tires on his truck. In questioning, Dennis said the suspect admitted to the killing. Dennis said investigators think Henderson's wife, Michelle, 40, helped clean blood from his truck. She is charged with accessory to murder after the fact. Dennis said additional charges in the case are pending further investigation. Investigators, he said, are trying to determine whether the victim was sexually assaulted. Francis Hannah said he was with Haley the night before she died. He said they were hanging out with friends and throwing darts at Brewer's Bar and Grill. He said the two made plans to see a movie the next week, and he left around 3 a.m. "We were going to see 'Rise of The Planet of Apes.'" Hannah said Haley was very outgoing and was well known in Sumter. "She was a very friendly girl," he said. "She could talk to anybody." Shannon Wilkinson was also friends with Haley. She said she had known Haley from the time they both worked at LB's restaurant on Guignard Drive together more than 10 years ago, and had stayed in touch since. "She was very sweet and vivacious," she said. "That's what makes (her death) so awful." Hannah and Wilkinson said they did not know Henderson personally, but when they saw pictures of him Thursday on news websites, he looked familiar. Hannah also said he didn't remember seeing Henderson that night. Haley's death likely closes an unrelated case in Clarendon County. Haley filed a report in Clarendon County on July 11, and told deputies she was assaulted by two men while the three were on a boat on Lake Murray on July 9. Clarendon County Sheriff Randy Garrett said the case will likely be dismissed. "We don't have a lot of evidence on it," he said. Garrett and Dennis both said the cases are not connected. Reach R. "This is an isolated incident," he said. Henderson's wife, Michelle, 40, was also arrested and charged with accessory after the fact to murder. Dennis said she is suspected of attempting to clean up the body. Check Friday's edition of The Item for more information. Darren Price / The Item Bond set for wife of man charged in stabbing Michelle Henderson stands with her attorney at her bond hearing Friday at Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center. Henderson, 40, is charged with accessory to murder after the fact in the stabbing death of Melissa Corley Haley and is being held at Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center on a $25,000 surety bond. By R. DARREN PRICE dprice@theitem.com Bond was set for the wife of a man charged with the killing of a Sumter woman. Michelle Henderson, 40, of Sumter County, is charged with accessory to murder after the fact and is being held at Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center on a $25,000 surety bond. Investigators from the Sumter County Sheriff's Office think she helped clean husband Samuel George Henderson's pickup truck Wednesday morning after the stabbing death of Melissa Corley Haley. Chip McMillan, Michelle Henderson's attorney, said she felt Haley's family's pain. "This is a tragedy," McMillan said. "Our hearts go out to the victim and her family." McMillan told the court his client is cooperating with investigators and has no criminal record. He said his client had only been married to Henderson since May and did not know about the killing until her husband got home. "This was a very unfortunate situation she found herself in," McMillan said. Members of her family declined comment Friday. Samuel Henderson, charged with murder, also appeared in magistrate's court Friday. He is suspected of stabbing Haley with a large pocket knife while the two were in his truck after leaving Scooters Lounge about 6 a.m. Wednesday and leaving her body on a dirt road near Cane Savannah Road. Because he is charged with murder, his bond will be set in circuit court at a later date. Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis said the suspect has prior aggravated assault charges. Members of Samuel Henderson's family say they also feel for the victim. Nicole Henderson, his sister-in-law and family spokesperson, said she had never known him to be violent and was a born-again Christian. She said the family feels Haley's family's pain. "I'm sorry for what has happened," she said. "And I'm sorry for what has been done." Reach R. Darren Price at (803) 774-1225. The ache in our hearts is as fresh as the day we were told you no longer took earthly breaths. Many things have changed since that fateful day; some have not. We love you just as much as ever and forever while we miss you more with each passing day. We miss your ready smile and your caring helpful ways. I am so grateful for each time you left me saying, "I love you, Mom." I regret the chance was not there at the end, to hold your hand, hug you, kiss your cheek, or encourage you with our love. I hope you now praise God in the angel choir and "dance in the skies" until we will one day join you. We love you forever, Mom and Dad, your children, big brother, and the rest of your family and friends [4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9] | |
