| HIST | Sara V. Boykin Sara Vivian Brogdon Boykin died on Friday, Feb. 18, 2011. She was born on July 20, 1920, and lived in Sumter her entire life. She was a daughter of Vivian Ellis Rhodes Brogdon and Thomas Elmore Brogdon. After the untimely death of her mother in 1925, Sara and her sister, Gloria, were reared in the home of their grandparents, Anna Esther Walker Bradham Brogdon and James Thomas Brogdon, both lifelong residents of Sumter County. It was a home full of family, friends, laughter, and conversation. Sara graduated from Lander College and shortly afterward met Sumter businessman Burrell Segars Boykin, whom she married in 1940. She taught elementary school in Sumter County and later returned to the University of South Carolina to pursue graduate work in piano pedagogy. Sara taught piano for 20 years, and at age 50, she put her business degree to use and managed the office of Dr. J. Capers Hiott until she retired on her 80th birthday. Sara was a devoted member of Trinity United Methodist Church where she served as youth leader, children's choir director, choir member, organist, wedding director, Sunday School teacher, Circle leader, and more. She was an active member of the arts community as she served on the Sumter-Shaw Community Concert Board. She is a former member of the Salvation Army Board, the Crosswell Orphanage Board and is a sustaining member of the Sumter Junior Welfare League. Sara knew almost everyone in Sumter County. And, because she was a Brogdon who married a Boykin, she was related (or connected) to most. Her life was filled with love for her family, friends, Trinity United Methodist Church, conversation, and her piano. She is survived by two daughters, Ann Brogdon Boykin Ligon and her husband, Robert Laine Ligon; Evelyn Segars Boykin Coombs and her husband, Richard Mundy Howard Coombs; two grandchildren, Sara Hunt Boykin Ligon Johnson and her husband, Steven Daniel Johnson, and Robert Laine Ligon Jr. and his wife, Katherine Taylor Lawrence Ligon; three great grandchildren, Daniel Adger Johnson, Evelyn Hazlewood Ligon, and Wilkins Ligon Johnson; a sister, Bunnie Brogdon Shuler and her husband, William Shaw Shuler. She was preceded in death by her husband; sister Gloria Ann Brogdon Carson; brother Thomas Elmore Brogdon Jr.; a special first cousin, Dr. Edward Watson Hook; and a great-granddaughter, Ellis Ann Speer Johnson. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Sumter with the Rev. Kevin Gorry officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Laine Ligon Jr., Steven Daniel Johnson, Dr. James Harmon Carson, Lt. Col. (ret.) William Jay Carson, William Hal Shuler, Thomas Gilmore Shuler, Jack William Erter, Charles George Rowland III, Earle Rowland II and Dr. J. Capers Hiott. The committal will be private. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall following the service. Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 226 W. Liberty St., Sumter, S.C. 29150. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Solaris Hospice, especially Irene Ward, and the staff at National Health Care. Online condolences may be sent to www.sumterfunerals.com. Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home & Crematory, 221 Broad St., is in charge of the arrangements. Posted in Obituaries on Sunday, February 20, 2011 [2] | |
